Yes I know… Not another thing about COVID-19…
This will not be an article to tell you all about COVID-19. I do not want to rant or give all the answers…
As a paramedic in the for-front of this, I feel our health agencies and the government is acting quick, prepared and staying ahead of the game with the limited budget and resources we have. I am pleasantly impressed.
IN THIS ARTICLE
I want to simply give you 3 of the TOP essential things you need to do to boost your immunity through this time and to also help those around you to stay healthy!
1.During COVID-19, Respect authorities
I know here in Canada and across north America we seem to act like we are invincible. We have the attitude that nothing can harm us… And that we will be fine and its not going to hit us like the rest of the world.
We tend to be arrogant, selfish and prideful.
Let me tell you that NO ONE is guaranteed tomorrow wether COVID-19 is going around or when things are normal!
I think this will show us how fragile life actually is and maybe that it will humble our nation. But that is besides the point here…
You need to respect the authorities. You are not invincible and neither is your neighbour. So abide by the rules. Do what our authorities tell us.
How can we do this?
- Be honest about travel history.
- Stay at home… It really isn’t that bad considering the risks. If everyone did stay at home then this will be over sooner! If we don’t it will soon become mandatory to stay at home for everyone anyways.
- Wash your hands WELL and don’t touch your face!
- Keep your distance from others and abide by the rules for how many people are allowed to be together.
Government and health authorities are placed there by God. We may not agree with them all the time, but also consider that we only hear the version that the media wants us to hear and not the full truth of what the government actually does.
2. During COVID-19, Stay Calm!
Rest assured this will pass and if we pay attention specifically to point 3 next, you can decrease the odds of catching the coronavirus.
But what can I do to stay calm?
- Enjoy time with family. I think this is a much needed time for us on this continent. Our lifestyles are way too busy. In a way we needed this. We all need to slow down and enjoy time with our family! Take time to be at home and rest! To get those things done that you would never get done otherwise!
- Don’t hoard! There will be lots of food and supplies like normal, IF we all just take what we need! It’s not the end of the world.
- Be kind… Goes hand and hand with the point above. Realize no one is perfect and no one can actually PERFECTLY follow the 6ft rule… So don’t give someone a stare-down if they come to close. And realize that you’re not the only one going through a hard time.
3. During COVID-19, Boost your immune system!
I believe one of the most important things that you can do is STRENGTHEN YOUR IMMUNE SYSTEM.
Long story short… The immune system’s job is to attack any invader that threatens your cells and to neutralize it. It will store it in its memory so that next time it can fight it off before it causes any sickness. Our immune system does this constantly.
However, today, there are quite a lot of people who do not have good immune responses and get sick very often, for longer and more severe.
So today, more than ever, YOU need to build up a strong immune system for prevention!
How do you do this?
Alkalize the body.
If your body is more to the acidic side, viruses and infections can grow rapidly. Your body cannot be healthy if it is always trying to keep up and stay above the water because of the onslaught of processed and sugary foods!
If your body is alkaline (the opposite of acidic and it’s the body’s normal state) then it is very hard to be sick.
So how can we keep the body Alkaline?
A. Cut out processed food and sugar!
This is what I believe the number 1 reason why immune systems are almost non existent today. There is an overload in processed sugar and food and it’s one of the top causes of a suppressed immune system. Which (in other words) could be the body shifting over on the acidic side. Then we see disease grow.
I am always hearing stories of people who lost a lot of weight, chronic conditions improved and off medications… All because of one common factor – Cutting out sugar. Stay away from or limit things like:
- Concentrated fruit drinks including gatorades
- Sodas or pops
- Junk food
- Fast food and anything that is made in the microwave
Just be more aware and check labels on everything to see what amount of sugar is actually in things!
The daily amount of sugar (not from natural sources like fruit) your body should have is for men- 37.5 grams or 9 teaspoons. Women- 25 grams or 6 teaspoons.
The average intake in America was 76.7 grams per day, which equals 19 teaspoons!!! And we ask why we are so sick and can’t get better?
B. Eat lots of WHOLE FOODS.
“Death is often not due to infections itself but the body’s inability to fight it because of nutrient deficiencies”.
Therefore, to not be deficient, you should eat lots of alkaline foods like fruits and vegetables! At least 2 servings of fruit and 8 servings of veggies. * ½ Cup = 1 Serving.
As always, just eat fruits and vegetables with all colours of the rainbow! Other powerhouses are:
- Green tea
- Barley grass
- Hot drinks, soups and broths
- Leafy greens
- Cruciferous family of veggies
- Garlic, onion, ginger…
So many spices and whole foods are filled with all the “anti’s”. Anti-bacterial, anti-fungal, anti-viral, anti-inflammatory…
C. Protect and nourish your GUT.
You need to support your bowels. They are where the majority of your immune system lies. So it is most critical to first take care of them.
Following points A-B are how you can keep your body alkaline BUT if your bowels aren’t in shape then your body will not be able to digest the nutritious food you are eating.
It is said that “you are what you eat”. But you are more “what you digest”.
And if you cut off sugar and eat whole foods but still have a gut that is so damaged and can’t digest these foods… Then you are nowhere.
That’s why at re-think-health my priority in helping people is always to start with the GUT! Then your body will be able to work and heal efficiently.
How can I protect and nourish my GUT?
2 Main things. Fiber and Probiotics (good bacteria).
Eat lots of foods and supplements full of fiber and probiotics because they are essential for the health of our GUT.
Fiber helps maintain the lining of the bowels and keeps things moving well…
Probiotics increase and replenish the bacteria that your bowels need to do their job efficiently. Fighting off inflammation and harmful pathogens are just 2 of their many jobs.
Some foods to try are:
- Nuts and seeds like hemp, chia, flax…
- Beans and lentils
- Herbal fiber colon cleanse.
Today more than ever, with hard winters and (for us in colder parts) lack of fresh produce most of the year… We are ALL bound to be deficient and will need to supplement. It’s a great advantage we have today!
And lastly… Especially during this time. You need to be active! Find an exercise plan you can do at home and get outside and walk or run!
Then get some sleep! No excuses now! Know what your body needs. For me I need at least 8 hours. I cannot stay healthy even if I do all the right things but do not get sleep…
Lack of sleep and stress will harm your gut and throw off your immune system.
